Why are well woman exams important?

During the exams, Dr. Adesomo checks for signs and symptoms of disease, such as cervical cancer, breast cancer, endometriosis, sexually transmitted infections, or other women’s health conditions that can become serious if not treated.

What should I expect during a well-woman exam?

At well woman exams, Dr. Adesomo or another team member at Houston Women’s Cosmetics go over your medical history and asks about concerns you may have about your health.

An OB/GYN expert checks your weight and blood pressure and asks you to leave a urine sample to check for pregnancy, dehydration, or the presence of certain diseases. Dr. Adesomo lets you know if you’re due for a:

  • Mammogram to check for breast cancer
  • Screening colonoscopy to check for signs of colon cancer
  • Bone scan to screen for osteoporosis
  • Pap test to check for early signs of cervical cancer

During a Pap test, Dr. Adesomo scrapes the surface of your cervix with a special instrument and sends the results to a lab to detect signs of cervical cancer. When caught early, cervical cancer is easily treated.

He may also order lab tests if you’re having certain symptoms to check for nutrient deficiencies, hormone imbalances, sexually transmitted diseases, or other gynecologic health conditions. Dr. Adesomo answers questions you have about your health, which may include:

  • Planning for pregnancy
  • Dealing with infertility
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Birth control methods
  • Managing menopausal symptoms

He gives you the time you deserve and addresses any other concerns you may have related to women’s health.

How often should I schedule a well-woman exam?

Dr. Adesomo lets you know how often to schedule a well woman exam. As a general rule, coming in once every year is a good rule of thumb. If you have a specific women’s health condition he’d like to monitor or treat, Dr. Adesomo may recommend more frequent OB/GYN visits.

If you become pregnant, you schedule more frequent appointments as well. You visit Houston Women’s Cosmetics about one time each month initially and once a week when your due date approaches.

Many gynecological conditions are easily treated when caught early, which is why annual well-woman exams are so important. Dr. Adesomo and the experienced medical team at Houston Women’s Cosmetics provide the compassionate bedside manner needed to make you feel comfortable in a warm, welcoming environment.
